A boiler running through California's heating season does not distribute that work evenly across every house in the state. Homes in California run heat about seven months a year, from November through May. What a contractor has to establish before quoting is how hard a specific system has been cycling, because a boiler in a mild coastal area and one working harder inland will arrive at the same calendar date carrying very different wear on the burner and heat exchanger. The statewide picture sets the season; the house sets the load.

Before a contractor can quote a boiler replacement, they have to look at what the distribution system is actually doing. Pressure ratings, expansion tanks, zone controls, the condition of the piping where it connects to the heat source: none of that can be read from a spec sheet. Half the homes in California were built in 1976 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A house built by then was plumbed and controlled to standards that have since changed, so a new boiler dropped into an unexamined system produces a specification mismatch, not a working installation. The contractor opens the system and measures before recommending anything.

FIND YOUR COUNTY

A county with a high event count means outdoor equipment faces real punishment: condensers sitting in driving rain, coil fins clogged by debris-carrying wind, refrigerant lines stressed by temperature swings that arrive fast and leave slowly. A unit that is undersized for those conditions will run short of its rated life, and one that is poorly sited will work harder than it should every season. The contractor you are matched with sizes and positions equipment for the specific exposure your property carries.

California HVAC Contractor License Requirements for Installation and Repair

California sets its own rules for who is permitted to perform HVAC installation and repair work on residential property. The provisions below are quoted directly from state sources, not paraphrased.

California requires a state contractor license: it is a misdemeanour to engage in the business of, or act in the capacity of, a contractor in California without one, unless the work is exempt.

Cal. Bus. & Prof. Code ch. 9 (California Legislative Counsel)

A state license for this trade determines which contractors are legally permitted to do the work on your home. Unlicensed work creates liability that falls on you as the homeowner. Every contractor this site routes a request to holds the license these provisions describe, and a request goes nowhere until that check is satisfied.
